When I was just an infant, my parents brought me to the nursery of Pilgrim Congregational, UCC of Lansing. There I was nurtured by the love and care of a wonderful group of people. As I grew, I was inspired by the compassion and deep faith of the many people who worked in the Sunday School department. The teachers and Christian Education Director shared their love and faith with me in a variety of different ways. As a youth, I was grateful to be able to share my thoughts and questions with those who served as our youth group advisors. All of these people helped my faith to grow.
In addition to these individuals who played specific roles in my faith development, there were many others who showed an interest in my life. Like Katy Headbloom, who grew up in this church, I had individuals recognize my gifts for ordained ministry, and encouraged me to consider the possibility of pursuing that life path. After I decided to become an ordained minister the people of Pilgrim church were with me every step of the way. They continue to offer their love and support to me this very day.
I am sure that many of you have similar experiences with local churches. Whether you were taken to church as a child, or found a church as an adult, you know the value of being connected to a church community. It is likely that as you look back over the years you will remember church people who have loved you, supported you, and guided you.
Over the past three years in which I have served this church I have heard a number of people say that the United Church of Christ in Midland, Michigan is a very special church. I agree with this statement. There are many aspects of this church that make it special. There is a clear sense that people care deeply about one another. There is freedom to explore faith in a richly diverse congregation. There is also a strong commitment to helping others.
Like all churches, the viability of the United Church of Christ in Midland is dependent upon the commitment and involvement of its members and friends. As we begin a new program year I encourage each one of us to reflect on what it is we appreciate about this church. I also encourage us to think about the ways in which we can be even more supportive of this church’s ministries. A local church not only provides a nurturing environment for future ordained ministers, but for all of its people. I hope that as you reflect on your relationship with this church that you will see how important it is to you.
