Children are a priority at UCC, Midland, and this church joyfully strives to meet the varied needs of all the families we serve. Children are welcome participants for Sunday morning worship, and invited to participate in Children’s Moments in the sanctuary each week. Children actively participate in leading worship for the entire congregation two times per year. Childcare is always provided in The Rainbow Door Room for the entire worship service for infants and toddlers.
During the school year, we have 5 Sunday School classes. Programming is provided for all children age birth-8th grade, and takes place following Children’s Moments.
The Rainbow Door Room is across the hall from the sanctuary and serves age 0-3 year olds. This classroom provides amenities for caring for infants. There is a caregiver in the Rainbow Door Room, but parents are always welcome to be with their children in this space if desired. There are speakers from the Sanctuary Sound System in this room so that caregivers and parents are able to hear the entire service.
The Red Door Room is in the Education Hallway and serves preschool through Kindergarten. Our class includes components of Music/Movement, Bible Story, Prayer time, Snack, and an age appropriate craft or activity every week.
The Orange Door Room in the Education Hallway serves as our class for 1st and 2nd graders. This is an active group, that enjoys an age appropriate activity or craft each week that correlates to a Bible Story. They also worship together with a gathering litany and prayer time as well. Snack and time to play is provided.
The Green Door Room is also in the Education Hallway and serves 3rd-5th grade students. This class learns skills to utilize their Bibles, reads a Bible Story, prays, and also has an age appropriate craft or activity every week. We often use videos from the Sparkhouse curriculum Holy Moly!
This classroom is Peanut-Free.
The Blue Door Room in the Education Hallway serves 6th – 10th grade. Students in this classroom spend a lot of time thinking about how ideas from the Bible are connected to everyday life and how Bible texts can be linked together to create a theme. The lessons and video we use is from a curriculum called Echo the Story. Blue Door Room students will remain in the sanctuary following Children’s Moments the first Sunday of every month. This allows for a time to share in worship and Communion with their families, and provides a varied experience for additional opportunities to grow and develop spiritually.
We at United Church of Christ, Midland, believe that our church should be a safe church for all those who come in good faith. Most important, it should be a safe church for the children, youth, and vulnerable adults who are entrusted to us.
All Sunday School teachers and helpers, Childcare providers, Youth Advisors, SAFE Church Volunteers, and Vacation Bible School Leaders are SAFE Church Trained. We have a weekly SAFE Church Volunteer that visits all Sunday School classrooms and offers teachers assistance when necessary. We offer annual SAFE Church Trainings, and believe that education is a key factor in protecting children in our church and community.

VBS 2018: Embracing the Fruits of the Spirit
August 6-10, 2018
Each day during VBS, we learned about a fruit of the spirit, a Biblical character whose story shares that value, a different country, and what life is like there in the words of children who live there. We also created an ecology and conservation science unit to accompany the lessons each day. We believe this is an exciting curriculum that will bring new meaning to familiar stories.
