Midland Interfaith Potluck

Our church will be hosting an interfaith potluck on Sunday, January 15, at 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall. This group has been meeting for a year as of January, in an effort to increase community among members of various faiths and to provide service to the larger community. This is the group that is sponsoring the newly-formed Foster Care Closet.   We invite members of the congregation to join us at this potluck. You will have the opportunity to meet manywonderful people in an informal setting as well as join us as we celebrate one year of ongoing and meaningfuldialogue. Food for this meeting will need either to have all ingredients listed or be dishes which are halal. If you have questions, please call the church office at (989) 631-1136 who will put you in contact with someone who can help you with Muslim dietary guidelines. A broad list of haram (forbidden) foods is given below.

  • Any grain products prepared with Haram ingredients such as alcohol, or animal shortening
  • Any vegetables and fruit prepared with alcohol, animal shortening, bacon, gelatin, lard or some margarines which contain monoglycerides or diglycerides from an animal source
  • Cheese, yogurt, ice cream, frozen tofu desserts made with animal rennet, gelatin, lipase, pepsin, pure or artificial vanilla extract or whey
  • Pork and pork products, e.g. bacon, deli meats, ham and sausage
  • Meat and poultry not slaughtered according to Islamic dietary law
  • Canned beans, peas and lentils containing pork
  • Any meat/meat alternative dish prepared with alcohol, pork or animal shortening
  • Beer, wine, alcohol, liqueur
  • Animal shortening, lard
  • Chocolates/candies made with alcohol or pure or artificial vanilla extract
  • Desserts made with gelatin
  • Chocolate liqueur (made from alcohol)
